POSITION OF THE DBSA-DALLAS ON BIPOLAR DISORDER AND DEPRESSION:

BIPOLAR DISORDER:The DBSA-Dallas holds that (correctly diagnosed) Bipolar Disorder, while influenced by many personal and environmental factors is a neurological condition that is genetic in origin. This view, shared by the National DBSA is also the consensus opinion of the medical and mental health care community and is supported by the vast body of scientific research.

DEPRESSION: The symptom clusters included under the rubric of depression have many causes – physiological, emotional, neurological, cognitive, situational, and genetic. Depression is also the most common experience across the lifetime of individuals with Bipolar Disorder. However, regardless of how a person came to be depressed the DBSA-Dallas and it members are there to support, listen, and encourage anyone who has or is affected by this condition.
